Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing

The recognised world-wide standard for GDT is ASME  Y14.5M  1994. GDT is
an internationally used engineering design methodology that includes a symbolic
language for communicating design specifications and tolerances fully and
accurately. The course explains the use of the GDT methodology to ensure that
the design intent is clearly defined and understood throughout product design,
Production and Quality Control operations and support activities. The course
also explains how GDT eliminates (or minimises) arbitrary or convenient
interpretation of specifications and tolerances which can have very costly
adverse effects on the designed function for the manufactured part.

The topics covered include :
  •  The use of the ‘Envelope Principle’ and the ‘Size controls Form’ philosophy.
  •  The consideration of maximum and minimum material conditions.
  •  Consideration of the shape & effects of tolerance zones.
  •  The ‘Bonus concept’ available due to Geometric Tolerancing.
  •  The use of a datum system in specifying relationships of feature and characteristics
  •  The ‘Virtual Condition’ philosophy for tolerance stacking.
  •  The opportunities for design of verification gauges to replace costly inspection exercises.
A major component of the course material is the symbolic GDT language. This
language provides a way by which the design can be most effectively
communicated. The use of symbols eliminates the need for lengthy and complex
notes on the design. As with any language, practice in reading, interpreting, and
speaking is vital for full understanding. For this reason the course includes
language practice at many points, and participants are coached in using the
language.

The course is available as :

  •  1 day Awareness Session
  •  2 day Training Course

Awareness Session

A 1 Day introduction to GDT covering the basic principles used and providing an
introduction to the Symbolic language on which GDT is based. Delegates will
have an appreciation of the common pitfalls experienced & the costs that can arise
by this misinterpretation.

Course Outcomes

OOn completion the attendee will be able to :

  •  Understand the fundamental principles on which GDT is based.
  •  Understand the correct use of the Datum system.
  •  Recognise the various controls applied within the GDT system.
  •  Know how to read and assess Geometric Tolerances.
  •  Understand the ‘Bonus concept’ and be able to use it.
  •  Be able to read, interpret & speak the language of GDT.

All training is provided conveniently at your own site for up to 10 delegates. All you need to provide is the room, your normal catering & of course the delegates.
